Supreme Court and Gay Marriage

The Supreme Court has made their decision on gay marriage, and it is amazing!

With the historic Supreme Court decision that came down just a few minutes ago allowing all people to wed the person of their choice, Better Together Weddings is preparing the final touches for the Ceremony of Rene Cotto & Frederick Lewis, our first gay Commitment Ceremony to be held in Orlando at Lake Eola at 6pm tomorrow evening and will coincide with the Marriage Equality Rally being held at the lake’s Bandshell.

In addition to being a sponsor of the rally, we will be performing this complimentary Commitment Ceremony to the couple during the rally as we thought it a perfect match, as we are avid supporters of marriage equality and the repeal of DOMA.

The Ceremony will be held on the grassy area known as The Peninsula on Lake Eola, very close to the intersection of Robinson and N. Eola Dr., and will begin at 6:30pm. The couple that we are marrying are truly inspirational people, and we are honored that they have chosen to allow us to host their ceremony. The public is invited to attend.

Our press release:

FOR RELEASE June 26, 2013
Media Contact: Brent Weaver,

We are pleased to announce that Better Together Weddings will be performing a complimentary Commitment Ceremony alongside the Marriage Equality Rally being held at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando on Thursday, June 27, 2013.

In the spirit of the day, Better Together Weddings is a proud sponsor of the Marriage Equality Rally and, as such, wanted to show their support for the historic ruling that will come down this morning at 10am from the Supreme Court of the United States critical to the gay rights movement. The justices are reviewing a federal appeals court’s ruling last year striking down Proposition 8, California’s 2008 voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, and a separate appeals court’s ruling declaring the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.

Better Together Weddings has secured the area at Lake Eola called “The Peninsula” and will feature one of their four-post wedding arbors complete with photography and music. Being “married” are Rene Cotto & Frederick Lewis, a same-sex couple who have overcome incredible obstacles and who are now ready to commit themselves as life-long partners. Cotto and Lewis were once both homeless, and have struggled with addiction and met as a result of their journey to recovery. “We are both HIV positive and try to give a voice to those who are not comfortable speaking up because of stigma,” says Cotto. “I personally now work in the field of HIV and we both are always looking to do our best to show that we are examples of being sober and we are examples to never give up.” Today Cotto and Lewis are two years sober and excited to share their story.

Upon hearing that they were chosen…“We are filled with gratitude because today what we once dreamed of being impossible is now possible in ALL areas of our lives…Love, Recovery and Health,” said Cotto. “We would definitely be grateful and open to sharing our experience with others.”

As the Supreme Court rules on the outcome of gay marriage, Better Together Weddings hopes to one day perform the ceremony that will legally bring Cotto and Lewis together as a couple recognized by the State of Florida and the U.S. Government.

The Cotto and Lewis Ceremony will take place on Thursday evening at 6:30pm at The Peninsula area on Lake Eola located near the NE corner of Robinson St and N. Eola Dr.
The public is invited to view this event.
